Fighting The Lies of Porn

I want to start this post by saying that I have never prayed over a blogpost more than this one. The words I say are not words of condemnation, but rather words of conviction. Over the past few months I have heard stories from people I have never met and from people I love dearly that either struggle with or have suffered from the effects of another’s addiction to porn, and now I have felt pushed to write about it publicly.

Porn is a dirty liar. Porn entices you by saying “You deserve this. Treat yourself to this. This is easier and more accessible than a real relationship. I find you beautiful. I will take you as you are. I will make you happy. Take a break from your anxiety, depression, and loneliness and spend the night with me.” But these literal tempters and temptresses leave you more lonely and alone than you were.

But there is another voice calling for your attention, and that voice’s name is Grace.

Porn obsesses. Grace calms.
Porn worries. Grace comforts.
Porn confuses. Grace enlightens.
Porn pushes. Grace leads.
Porn lusts. Grace loves.
Porn frightens. Grace reassures.
Porn rushes. Grace stills.
Porn empties. Grace satisfies.

Porn isn’t the only voice calling out with these lies. Pride, laziness, greed, hatred, selfishness, and lust manifest in far more outlets and in far more ways than found in porn. But even though there are so many temptations, following this One Voice of Grace is the true way to satisfy us.

“You may think that the situation is hopeless, but God give us more grace when we turn away from our own interests. So submit yourselves to the one true God and fight against the devil and his schemes. Come close to the one true God, and he will draw close to you.” (James 4:6-7 [The Voice Translation])

I encourage you to turn away from your own interests, be it porn or anything else, and accept this invitation Grace daily extends our way. I promise you that Christ’s grace is more satisfying and fulfilling than anything else you could ever come across.

I am fighting for you. I am fighting for my younger brother and sister. I am fighting for my boyfriend. I am fighting for my friends. I am fighting for my pastors, elders, deacons, professors, and mentors. I am in this fight, and I am fighting for Love. It is my prayer that we all release these chains that Christ has broken and step into a life of Grace.

It’s not just a fight against porn. It’s a fight for Grace. Lord Jesus, Your Kingdom come; Your will be done.
